The History of Sneaton Castle
Sneaton Castle is a historic building located in the town of Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. The castle was built in the mid-19th century by the Wake family, who were prominent landowners in the area.
The Wake family originally owned the nearby Sneaton Hall, but in the mid-1800s they decided to build a grander home on the site. They employed the architect James Pigott Pritchett to design the castle, which was completed in 1852.
The castle was designed in the Victorian Gothic style, with turrets, battlements, and elaborate stonework. It was built using locally sourced materials, including sandstone and Whitby jet, a black, hard gemstone that is unique to the area.
The castle remained in the Wake family until the early 20th century when it was sold to the Catholic Church and converted into a school. It later became a teacher-training college, before being acquired by the Order of the Holy Paraclete, a community of Anglican nuns, in 1976.
The nuns have used the castle as a convent and retreat centre ever since, and have made a number of additions and alterations to the building over the years. Despite these changes, much of the original architecture and features of the castle have been preserved, making it a unique and impressive example of Victorian Gothic design.
Today, Sneaton Castle is not open to the public, but the grounds are accessible to visitors who wish to enjoy the beautiful scenery and peaceful surroundings.
