The Latimer family built the castle in the fourteenth century to take the place of an older one at Castleton that had been destroyed by fire. Some of mediaeval England's most prominent nobles belonged to the Latimer family.
Danby Castle was designed as a quadrangular castle, featuring a rectangular building with a central courtyard and towers at each corner. As the Latimer family line came to an end in the late 14th century, the estate passed to the Neville family, who were descendants of Elizabeth Latimer.
John Neville wed Catherine Parr for the third time in the sixteenth century, and they lived together at Danby Castle. Afterwards, Catherine Parr became King Henry VIII's sixth wife. The Danvers family then received ownership of the land, and Sir Henry Danvers was created Earl of Danby. Danby was bought by John Dawnay in the seventeenth century, and the Dawnay family has owned the estate ever since.
